Killing Parrots Softly

It’s one of those sickening “WTF are we doing to these amazing creatures?” Videos.

Being so close to their wild ancestors creates unique problems with owning a parrot as a pet. Parrots are naturally “prey animals” (ie. predators eat them: parrots are “prey”) and as such flock together in large groups as protection against predators. Parrots have loud calls so that they can communicate with their flock, and to alert the flock to dangers. Parrots are highly intelligent and form firm, bonded and monogamous pairs with mates. Parrots fly long distances and forage for food throughout the day.
In captivity, parrots are often kept isolated in cages, often with their wings clipped to prevent them from flying. They are unable to forage and do what comes naturally to them throughout the day, and this often brings on stress and boredom that can lead to self-mutilation: plucking off their own feathers and sometimes even worse (biting wounds into their breasts). Parrots like to chew, but they don’t know that your wall, computer, phone, table etc. is not meant for that form of play.

A parrot’s beak is an amazing instrument meant to be used to find the tasty and nutritious nuts inside extremely tough shells. It is a tool for climbing, preening, and protection. The force that a beak can exhibit to crack open these nuts is impressive.
Captivity isn’t natural, and a parrot that bites its owner is not a “bad bird”, it is merely using the only tool it has to react to this unnatural environment.
Unfortunately, when parrot beak and human flesh meet, the beak always wins.
For companion parrot guardians:
Biting and ABA - An article by Bev Penny, Living With Parrots, that discusses how using ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) can help you learn to work with a companion parrot that bites. Bev writes,

“… biting is a learned behaviour. The people who accept this behaviour from their birds is actually doing their bird a disservice. Isn’t it much better to learn how to prevent your bird from biting in the first place?…ABA teaches you how to become the best avian caregiver you can be. Then you can teach other caregivers, and they can teach other caregivers and we can help parrots keep their homes.”

I was sad for my beloved RIP Muriel the cockatiel death. I was looking for her breeder and to see if I could find out who Muriel’s parents were or maybe if she had brother, sisters left behind. Or I might found out how she was born. I searched and found Lynn, I thought that she might possibility be Muriel’s breeder. I called her and went there to see her. I saw her birds were all living in the dirty air, filthy cages, and no toys. Those 4-6 weeks new baby cockatiels were crowd together, and all tried to regurgitate to each other. I was very concerned about their conditions. she told me “that babies are just fine” I asked her that “does she give her birds a bathe?” She said “no, in this environment, her birds don’t require a bathe. If bird wanted to take a bathe, they can do in their water bowl. “Go take a look very closely, some of cages there don’t even have any water bowl. Because the air quality was so poorly in the house , and she had a lung problem. She had a long hose hung up to the oxygen machine to her nose for breathing. I asked her how about those birds. She did even care her birds breathing the bad air. Then I saw Adam the African Grey looked really sad in his cage. Beside of his food bowls, there was no toys, his feathers covered with all the dust. I asked her what was the story about the Adam. And she said she purchased him that his owner didn’t have enough time for attention to him. So, she brought him home and let him live in the outside with his mate and used him as a breeder. Unfortunately, his mate got killed by a raccoon 3 months ago. So, she brought him back in to the house. When I was mentioned to her about the Rose breasted cockatoo, she pulled the curtains up, and turned the lights on for me to look, there were hundreds of birds that were living inside of her garage. Aww…. I thought she was just breeding a few baby birds. Turned out to be there were as many over 400 Exotic birds in her home she said. She told me that she had all kind of parrots that people don’t have. At that time I did not know what I had run into …. Whole thing just tooo sad to think about it…. The filthy home, garage, back yard. Can you imagine that many birds are all in caged 24/7, either without lights, no fresh air, or stayed in the cold, wind and rains. Not even that toys, enrichments, or attention just for her none stop breeding for her cash only business, she did not have a license to sell birds… She blocked all the entry way for people or raccoons to come in, and closed all the windows for the noise. If there was a fire, none one be able to save them, those birds will all be killed in a few seconds. 2 days ago, I went to visit again. I was thinking that if I could buy Adam out of this situation. But, she found out who I was. I told her, it was not my intention to come after her. She said she had done nothing wrong, she took the birds of people who don’t want them any more, and she is doing just likes a her hoppy….. Great! But, you cannot used them as your human slaves. And, the bad air for those babies Cockatiels emit a dander, also people who bought them can cause problems with compromised lungs. The place is totally terrible unhealthy environment, carrying and can spread diseases to humans. No human or animal should be living in this condition. I am very sorry what I did, but how about behind the curtains those intelligent parrots were talking up a storm,( I could heard many of African Greys) while she was arguing with me…. Lynn, They are just like 5 or 6 years our human kids, and you kept them inside the cage without any hope, this is really, really wrong…this is animal cruelty. Please someone can help them to safe place or good homes.

One of my FB friends needs help & advice. She has found a breeder in her town (San Jose CA) that has about 400 birds, in terrible conditions (of course.) The breeder is in ill health and has family help feed & water the birds once a week. Inspectors from the city have cited her on zoning laws so now the breeder is doing a “quick sale” of birds to down size. As of right now she is not surrenderin…g any of the birds, but this is what needs to be done. I know I have a lot of friends on here that are animal activists and have done a lot of rescues. Please help my friend help these birds. Go to her page or message her, she does not know what to do next and I don’t have the experience on a case this big.

This happens too fucking often…

Larger birds need to get some pellets and fresh fruit going on as well as some nuts.
